At some stage in their life, most women, unless they have sex with other women, don’t get to see another woman’s labia/vulva, but worry about whether they are normal ‘down there’. Medically, it is useful if women know what they usually look like, so they can notice if anything changes. It is their vulva, and young women should be encouraged to check themselves with a mirror so that they know their usual appearance and can notice if anything changes. When they are familiar with their appearance in times of health, they can notice times of difference. And, if differences are noticed, it’s important to pop along to see a doctor or nurse who can check for early signs of abnormality – or just reassure the woman.
If in doubt about anything, at any time, get it checked – without delay.
And, if you can’t get an appointment immediately, in case visible symptoms change/improve/deteriorate, take some good quality digital images of whatever you’re worried about. This can then be shown to your chosen healthcare professional.
