Am I going through normal menopause?

I am 53 years old and having heavy bleeding from last five years. Now from last ten months I am having periods after every two months, but it is still heavy. I have gone through ultrasonography and it shows multiple intramural & subserosal fibroids. What should I do? Am I going through normal menopause? – L

Dear L

Fibroids make menstrual bleeding heavier but they generally shrink with the menopause. Given your age and the fact that your periods are becoming less regular, I suspect you are merely perimenopausal and that they will stop before much longer. However, I can’t tell you any more than that, but your doctor can. So please make an appointment and discuss your worries and general health concerns with him or her, in person as, I suspect, there are probably more symptoms involved than you have mentioned here.

I hope this helps a little.
