One type of GUD : This person, whom the photographer said was a woman, has a primary syphilitic chancre or sore in her anal area. The Chancre surrounding her anus is open and oozing.

Genital Ulcers are extremely common. Indeed, their prevalence is probably rising around the world.

Different forms of GUD exist and should be considered during assessment of genital sores.

Some examples of GUDs include:

* Bejel;

* Chancroid;

* Donovanosis (Granuloma Inguinale);

* Herpes (HSV / HHV);

* LGV (Lymphogranuloma Venereum)

* Syphilis;

* Pinta; and

* Yaws.
